Laguna de Apoyo (2 hours)

Located just outside Granada, Laguna de Apoyo is the largest and most beautiful of Nicaragua’s ten crater lakes. Its crystalline, deep-blue waters form an oasis of absolute tropical tranquility. The gentle, wooded slopes leading down to the shore are dotted with vacation homes and rustic inns with facilities for accessing the lagoon. Apoyo is perfect for water sports, sailing, or just lulling on the gentle waves on a floating platform. Its clear, unspoiled waters and the volcanic contours of its floor also make it an attractive spot for freshwater scuba diving. A scenic overlook from the nearby village of Catarina features a collection of shops and restaurants where one can sample traditional gastronomy while taking in a serenade of local folk favorites from strolling marimba and guitar combos. The truly adventurous can also partake of paragliding expeditions over Apoyo’s blue crater that depart from here.
